The last day of Polish occupation, the first day of Russian take-over was Sunday, the 23rd of September 1939, a beautiful day for summer picnics or a drive in the country. We knew that the Germans were advancing swiftly along the entire front but somehow we had become blind to the very real danger it posed, or that it would soon have a life-changing effect on our lives.
